Rory Hu is an eighth grader at the Harker Middle School in California. She is a Class of 2028 Caroline D. Bradley Scholar as well as a 2023 winner of the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. After becoming a TIME For Kids kid reporter in 2020 and interviewing Apple CEO Tim Cook, she was recruited for Nick News, a news program for the popular U.S. kid’s TV channel Nickelodeon. Enjoying an Emmy-nominated career as the show’s youngest reporter, Rory has had the chance to interview notable figures such as Janet Yellen, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, and Jen Psaki, the former White House Press Secretary. In addition to journalism, Rory enjoys other passions in areas such as science, speech and debate, and student leadership. Last year, her research project on honey bees won the $10,000 DoD STEM Talent Award at Broadcom MASTERS (now ThermoFisher JIC), the most prestigious middle school science competition in America. She’s also a winner of the sixth annual New York Times podcast contest and a NSDA runner-up in Extemporaneous Speaking. Finally, Rory seeks to make change through her school’s Student Belonging Board as well as serving on the Cupertino Teen Commission.
